The Handmaid’s Tale’s penultimate season has been an epic chapter in the story of June Osborne (played by Elisabeth Moss) and her fight against Gilead. The Hulu dystopian drama has been filled to the brim with shocking exits, the latest taking place in season five, episode six, Together. Following Esther’s (Mckenna Grace) attack in the previous episode, a fatal punishment was in store for one of the commanders.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from The Handmaid’s Tale.

After poisoning herself and Janine (Madeline Brewer), Esther tells Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) that Commander Warren Putnam (Stephen Kunken) raped her and she was now pregnant with his child.

Lydia took matters into her own hands and informed Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) of what happened who was less than pleased with Putnam’s actions.

Later in the episode, Putnam is dragged away by the Eyes while out for breakfast with his wife Naomi (Ever Carradine), having teased there would be a second child on the way for them.

He is brought to his knees in front of Lawrence and Commander Blaine (Max Minghella) who tells him: “The High Criminal Court of Gilead, in a special overnight session, found you, Commander Putnam, guilty of apostasy — sins of the flesh.”

Putnam says that’s “insanity”, as Lawrence clarifies it was “rape of unassigned property”.

Despite him pleading for his life, Nick pulls the trigger, killing Putnam on the tiled Gilead flag.

Commander Putnam was one of the most villainous characters in The Handmaid’s Tale who had no sympathy with the women he attacked, only caring about his privileged position.

His death will be celebrated by many and could actually benefit his former colleague Lawrence.

Taking to Reddit, The Handmaid’s Tale fan mikashisomositu theorised: “Maybe Naomi Putnam will be the key to Commander Lawrence gaining power?

“If he wouldn’t marry Serena because she’s a wicked oddball, Naomi would make a better fit.

“We also know Naomi is closer to Commander Lawrence’s stance on handmaids – quiet compassion.

“She would probably support discretion if she witnessed Lawrence playing sides.”
