The coronation of King Charles III will take place on the same day as Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s son, Archie’s birthday. Buckingham Palace has announced that the Coronation will take place on Saturday, May 6, 2023. The ceremony will take place at Westminster Abbey, conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury.
King Charles III will be crowned alongside Camilla, Queen Consort.
The Palace said the ceremony will “reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry.”
It will coincide with Archie Harrison’s fourth birthday, also taking place on 6 May.
It is not yet known whether or not Meghan and Harry will be in the UK for the festivities, despite their attendance at the Queen’s Jubilee and her funeral in September.
“To attend your father’s coronation is very obviously a royal thing, and it depends if that is something they want to take part in, bearing in mind they left because those were the things they seemed they wanted to avoid, the ceremonies and difficulties of existing as a visible public royal.”
King Charles III is reportedly planning a “slimmed down coronation” ceremony, amid the national cost of living crisis.
It also reflects his vision for a wider “slimmed down monarchy”.
The King has expressed a wish that his service is considered “good value”, sources told the Telegraph.
The service will reportedly be “far shorter” than Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation, which went on for three hours, partly because of the new King’s age.
A Coronation Committee, made up of privy counsellors, will be appointed to arrange the ceremony.
Royal commentator Camilla Tominey said that Charles’ vision for a “slimmed-down monarchy” is an attempt to promote his image as a “frugal” monarch.
