The Crown makes its big comeback soon but already the series stoking controversy with some critics, suggesting it’s too soon for the drama to be released following the death of Britain’s longest-serving monarch Queen Elizabeth II. Nonetheless, Netflix will be going ahead with the forthcoming series and recently shared an airdate with further details expected to be coming out soon. Netflix will be dropping The Crown season five on Wednesday, November 9 with the entire run in one go to binge.
There will be another 10 episodes in the new season, like the previous outings and will feel more like a series of feature films than a TV show.
Despite the coronavirus lockdown, production on season five wasn’t affected by the pandemic with the show-makers managing to complete filming before the global shutdown.
Season six is now filming with production briefly pausing following the Queen’s death before resuming.

Season five will focus on the fallout of Prince Charles (played by Dominic West) and Princess Diana’s (Elizabeth Debicki) marriage breakdown and divorce as well as her tragic death in 1997.
Viewers will also see the Queen (Imelda Staunton) reacting to Diana’s death and her son’s divorce, something she was hoping to avoid.
In fact, both seasons five and six are slated to be tumultuous and full of divorce for three of the Queen’s children.
West previously said of the fifth outing: “It will be as tumultuous as it gets, I think.” He added to Deadline: “I love the man. He’s a force for good, he really is an extraordinary man.”
Season five’s cast has once again been overhauled with a whole host of new actors taking on older versions of the characters with Vera Drake actress Imelda Staunton leading as Queen Elizabeth II as she takes over from Oscar winner Olivia Colman.
Joining her will be veteran thespian and Game of Thrones star Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, replacing Tobias Menzies.
Acclaimed star of Phantom Thread and Mum takes on Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret from Helena Bonham Carter.
Star of The Affair and The Wire Dominic West plays an older version of Prince Charles, after the role was portrayed by Josh O’Connor.
Replacing Emma Corrin as Princess Diana will The Night Manager’s Elizabeth Debicki.
Olivia Williams of an Education and The Nevers fame will be starring as Camilla Parker Bowles after the role was previously played by Emerald Fennell.
There’s no trailer for The Crown season five, however, Netflix did drop a brief teaser from its annual Tudum event which showcases its upcoming shows and films.
In the short snippet, a statement is read out confirming Prince Charles and Princess Diana will be getting divorced.
Both Charles and Diana are seen preparing to give television interviews as the sounds of news reports start to overlap and reach a crescendo.
The clip finishes with the damning words: “This is becoming all-out war”, suggesting Charles and Diana will be going head-to-head in their very public and acrimonious split.
