Liz Truss has vowed not to back down in a Brexit row with the EU after suggestions the UK was ready to cave in talks with Brussels.
No10 today rejected claims that Britain would be willing to continue giving the European Court of Justice (ECJ) a final say on how the Northern Ireland Protocol is being implemented.
Unionists have been left angry that the EU court is the ultimate authority on the deal.
It had been reported that Britain was willing to drop its opposition to the role of the ECJ in overseeing the agreement in order to reach a compromise on customs checks.
However, warning the EU that there was no change in position, the Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “Our view remains that it is inappropriate for a court of the EU to remain the supreme arbiter of law in Northern Ireland.
“You will know that we are moving to official level talks and of course, we want to resolve this through negotiation.
“There will be meetings with officials that will take place this week and the weeks ahead.”
Talks over problems caused by the Northern Ireland Protocol first started a year ago.
For months talks were at stalemate, with both the UK and EU refusing to compromise on their red lines.
However, there is now hope that a deal could be reached in the next three weeks.
Currently, the devolved Northern Ireland Assembly is not sitting after the DUP said it would not take up its place in a power-sharing executive until its concerns over the Protocol were sorted.
A breakthrough in Brexit talks is needed by October 28 in order for the DUP to take up its place in the executive and for Northern Ireland to avoid fresh elections to the devolved parliament.
