The surge testing comes amid fears for the further unlocking of lockdown restrictions on June 21, dubbed ‘freedom day’.

Cases of the Delta variant are on the rise in the UK, with latest figures on Tuesday showing 6,048 new cases and 13 new deaths recorded in the 24 hours from Monday.

The news comes as Prime Minister Boris Johnson is reportedly weighing up whether to delay the lifting of all Covid restrictions in England.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak is understood to have said he would accept a delay of up to four weeks to the end of the Covid road map, according to reports in the Guardian.
