Queen Margrethe II has held talks with her youngest son after her decision to strip his children of their royal titles caused a backlash. However it appears that the monarch is determined to repair things within the family having issued a statement to Danish news outlet B.T after meeting her son.

In the statement the royal palace vowed that Prince Joachim and the sovereign would “look forward” and find a way to resolve the situation.

They said:”The Queen and Prince Joachim have spoken together at Fredensborg.

“Everyone agrees to look forward, and as the Queen herself has expressed, she and Prince Joachim want calm to find their way through this situation.”

It comes after the octogenarian monarch make took the unusual step of releasing a public apology for any hurt that had been caused by the decision.

However the Queen added that she stood by her original decision arguing that it was “a necessary safeguard for the future of the monarchy”.

As a result of the decision Prince Nikolai, 23, Prince Felix, 20, Prince Henrik, 13, and 10-year-old Princess Athena will no longer be able to use the titles of prince and princess.

They will also have the status His/Her Royal Highness removed.

However they will be able to keep the aristocratic titles of Count and Countess of Monpezat given in 2008.

Formally they will be known as His Excellency Count of Monpezat or Her Excellency Countess of Monpezat.

The line of succession will remain unchanged.

Queen Margrethe has also justified the decision on the basis that it will give her grandchildren more freedom in the future.
