An Australian woman took to social media to complain about supermarkets replacing cashiers with self-checkout machines after a worker tried to check her receipt as she exited a shop. The post on the popular Facebook group ‘Meanwhile in Australia’ attracted a huge response from people who felt the same way about retailers cutting down costs by replacing staff with self-checkouts.
The woman expressed her frustration over the worker, who she says was by the exit of the shop and stopped every customer to check their receipts.
She called the process “nonsense” and said her reaction to the controls was just to raise her hand holding the receipt, skip the line and exit the shop, ignoring the worker.
The shopper urged retailers “either trust me to do self-checkout, or put your cashiers back”, and not to audit her “for a position [they] refuse to employ any longer”.
The post read: “Dear Kmart, Coles, Woolworths etc and all other stores that have self-checkout. You are almost exclusively self-checkout now. The last time I was there the lady checking receipts at the exit was stopping everyone.

The post attracted thousands of likes and comments from people who shared the same feelings over the issue with the woman.
Someone said: “I refuse to use self-checkout. If I wanted to process the goods I would get a job there. Do the people who do use the self-checkout realize they are putting people out of jobs. If the stores are saving money on employing people why isn’t the price of things going down, or at least give those who do use self-checkout get a discount due to doing the work themselves?”.
Another Facebook user said: “I agree. Why should I use a self checkout. I am not getting the items any cheaper. Bring back that little thing called SERVICE.”
Others echoed these concerns and added that the use self-service checkouts can be frustrating itself: “Self service stresses me out. Half the time I place item in bagging area and it doesn’t compute. The other annoyance is no space to pack your trolley. And I I feel rushed because it’s always a huge line up. I’ll stick to having a human serve me thanks.”
