According to fans in the arena, Kyrgios announced that he was injured and forced to pull out before Fritz decided to take to the court and have a practise session to allow the crowd to watch some tennis afetr being denied the chance to see their mouthwatering clash.

The Wimbledon finalist is next set to compete at the Swiss Indoors Basel in just over two weeks’ time. He will then play the Paris Masters the week after before ending his season in singles, though will head to Turin to compete in the ATP Finals with Kokkinakis.

Kyrgios is also 18th in the race to qualify for the prestigious year-end tournament in the singles but his chances now look highly unlikely after withdrawing from Tokyo. Had the ATP offered ranking points at Wimbledon, the Aussie would have presumably also qualified in singles.
