Meghan Markle broke 'the only hard rule' the Queen 'required' – but looked 'stunning'

According to royal experts, one of Queen Elizabeth’s most major fashion rules for female members of the Royal Family was to wear tights with dresses and skirts. Hemlines were also usually recommended to be knee-length. However, the Duchess of Sussex broke this protocol and did things a little differently while she carried out royal duties.

Meghan went against royal tradition in August 2018 when she stepped out in a short black dress without tights, showing off her bare, slim legs.

The Duchess of Sussex opted for a £327 tuxedo dress by Canadian label Judith and Charles to attend a gala performance of the musical Hamilton at the Victoria Palace Theatre in London.

The dress had an open collar, plunging neckline, and long sleeves.

But what shocked fans was its short hemline, reaching a few inches above her knees, and, therefore showing off her tightless legs.

Royal expert Victoria Arbiter spoke about the Royal Family’s rule for women to wear tights.

She told Insider at the time: “You never see a royal without their nude stockings.

“Meghan, from what I can see from the engagement photographs, it doesn’t look like she was wearing tights or stockings.

“I would say that’s really the only hard, steadfast rule in terms of what the Queen requires.”

Fashion expert Stephen Sheldon previously told Express.co.uk: “Royal women are supposed to have a modest decorum when it comes to their legs, from having to wear tights in all weathers to a rule of thumb that skirts and dresses are no shorter than four inches above the knee.”

    DON’T MISS:

Although Kate, Princess of Wales, is another female member of the Royal Family who wears short dresses, Stephen added that she “always keeps it classy and modest”.

She does this by donning “a covered-up jacket or top, as well as more opaque luxury tights”.

Although Meghan broke royal protocol in August 2018, royal fans praised her daring look, with many saying she looked “stunning”.

At the time, Twitter user Hope said: “She looked stunning in that tuxedo dress. She was glowing and looked so happy. True beauty inside and out.”

User Fallon commented: “She looks absolutely stunning. Such a genuine warmth about her.”

However, this wasn’t the only time Meghan was seen without tights.

In January 2019, the Duchess stepped out in a short dress, without tights, twice in one week.

On January 16, Meghan opted for a pale pink H&M knitted dress to visit the Mayhew Animal Welfare Charity.

The dress featured long sleeves, a high neckline, and a short hemline – its skirt rested just above Meghan’s knees.

She matched this with an Armani wool coat she had been seen in before, as well as nude high heels and a matching nude Stella McCartney bag.

On January 30, Meghan wore another pastel pink outfit to meet staff at the National Theatre, choosing a short, v-neck dress with a tight bodice and a pleated skirt.

She paired this with a matching peach blazer and white heels with stylish strings that were tied neatly around her ankles.

She completed the look with a tiny white and gold clucth bag and gold earrings.

This dress too was above Meghan’s knees, and she accessorised it sans tights – giving the outfit a modern, stylish lift.
