Many people living in Russia are “convinced Putin will go nuclear” as he is forced into a corner by a blistering Ukrainian counteroffensive, according to an intelligence and security analyst. Former CIA officer Robert Baer told CNN that the chances of Putin using nuclear weapons “increases every day”. He explained: “The Russians I am in contact with inside Russia are convinced he is going to go nuclear. I do not know how well connected they are but this threat – it was a threat initially – the more trouble he is in the more likely it is that he is going to use nuclear weapons.” Mr Baer’s comments come amid a hugely successful Ukrainian counteroffensive that has seen Volodymyr Zelensky’s troops retake almost the entire Kharkiv region.
Meanwhile, Russian forces in the Donetsk region town of Lyman are reportedly on the brink of encirclement following Ukrainian gains to their north and east.
The fall of the town would be another military set-back for Russia and position the Ukrainians to push into Luhansk, reversing the hard-won gains of Russia’s summer offensive in Donbas and thwarting one of Putin’s key military aims.
