Before the Queen died on September 8, then Prince Charles divided his time between four main UK properties, but his favourites were Clarence House in London and Highgrove House in Gloucestershire. Now his reign has begun, Charles will need to decide where he and other members of the Royal Family will live going forward. Here are 11 royal residences Charles can call home now he is King.

Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, Balmoral Castle, Sandringham House and Craigowan Lodge

Now he is King, Charles has use of the Crown residences the late Queen lived in, Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle.

Windsor Castle is nearly 1,000 years old and it has served as the monarch’s residence since it was founded by William the Conqueror in the 11th Century.

Charles has also likely inherited the royal private residences of Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire, which includes a modest property called Craigowan Lodge, and Sandringham House in Norfolk.

Highgrove House, Llwynywermod, Birkhall, Clarence House

King Charles made regular use of four properties when he was Prince of Wales, although some of them now belong to Prince William.

As the new Duke of Cornwall, William now owns the Duchy of Cornwall properties of Highgrove House in Gloucestershire and Llwynywermod in Carmarthenshire, Wales.

As Highgrove House has been Charles and Queen Camilla’s country residence for decades, it isn’t clear whether he will keep Highgrove as a retreat now he is King.

As the new Prince of Wales, William may want to use Llwynywermod when he and Kate, Princess of Wales visit the country.

Charles inherited Birkhall in Aberdeenshire back in 2002 when the Queen Mother died and he and Camilla have frequently visited over the years.

Clarence House was Charles’ official residence as Prince of Wales, and it is located in London near St James’s Palace.

Whether Charles will now run his office at Buckingham Palace, which is undergoing extensive renovations or keep it at Clarence House, is unknown.
