Mills says it is down to the players to take their club form into the international scene, not the manager. He added: “It’s not solely down to Southgate. Do you really think he’s saying to his players, ‘You’re doing great for your club, now I want you to do something completely different’? No!
“Players have to take that, the confidence they have playing for their clubs, into an England game, and they’re not doing that at the moment. They seem afraid.
“Being a manager is so difficult. It’s so much easier making the calls from the sofa or, like us, on the radio.”
