Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has suggested the idea of a Premier League North vs South All-Star match – so which players could feature and who would miss out? Express Sport picks a North XI and a South XI and looks at the big-name players who do not make the cut.

Boehly has claimed the Premier League can learn more from American sports and raise money for the football pyramid. Speaking on Tuesday, he said: “Ultimately I hope the Premier League takes a little bit of a lesson from American sports.

“And really starts to figure out, why don’t we do a tournament with the bottom four sports teams, why isn’t there an All-Star game? So we’re thinking we could do a North versus South All-Star game for the Premier League, for whatever the pyramid needed quite easily.”

The selections for both teams would lead to plenty of debate. Express Sport looks at who would and who wouldn’t make each respective team, with a maximum of three players from a single club.

    North XI (4-3-3)

    Jordan Pickford

    Kieran Trippier

    Ruben Dias

    Virgil Van Dijk

    Andy Robertson

    Casemiro

    Bruno Guimaraes

    Kevin De Bruyne

    Mohamed Salah

    Erling Haaland

    Allan Saint-Maximin

England No 1 Pickford lines up in goal behind a strong backline which includes Champions League and Premier League winners. Casemiro is yet to make a Premier League start but as a five-time Champions League winner he slots into the midfield alongside fellow Brazilian Guimaraes and De Bruyne.

Ten goals in six games makes Haaland a shoo-in up front. Mohamed Salah joins him, with Newcastle’s Saint-Maximin on the opposite flank.

    South XI (3-4-3)

    Aaron Ramsdale

    William Saliba

    Thiago Silva

    Cristian Romero

    Reece James

    Declan Rice

    James Ward-Prowse

    Bukayo Saka

    Raheem Sterling

    Harry Kane

    Son Heung-min

Another England goalkeeper is between the sticks for the South XI, with Ramsdale the first of three Arsenal inclusions. Saliba slots into defence, with Saka at left wing-back.

Saliba is joined by South American duo Thiago Silva and Romero in the back three. James and Sterling are two other Chelsea inclusions, with the Tottenham attacking duo Harry Kane and Son in the frontline.

    Who misses out?

Notable players who missed out from Chelsea include N’Golo Kante and Mason Mount. Arsenal fans may be aggrieved not to see the likes of Martin Odegaard or Gabriel Jesus in the side.

Wilfried Zaha has often been described as the best player outside the top six but doesn’t make the cut on this occasion. Ivan Toney and Aleksandar Mitrovic have both started the season on fire in front of goal, too.

Brighton fans may think their start to the campaign could have seen the likes of Moises Caicedo, Alexis Mac Allister or Pascal Gross picked. Lewis Dunk would also be close to being named in defence.
