Meghan Markle has given birth to a 7lb 11oz daughter, her press secretary announced this afternoon. The Duchess of Sussex and husband Prince Harry welcomed their new addition on Friday in California and both mother and child are healthy and well.

The couple quit the royal family last year, but Harry has remained close to his grandmother despite his move to the USA.

So much so, in fact, he and wife Meghan have paid tribute to her in naming their baby girl.

The couple have chosen the name  Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor.

Lilibet comes from the family nickname for the Queen, the baby’s great-grandmother, who was supposedly given the sweet moniker as she couldn’t pronounce her own name as a child.

Her middle name was chosen to honour her beloved late grandmother, the Princess of Wales, the couple said.
