Police say the youngster was attacked with a “bladed article” in Quayside Newcastle, at around 3am. Officers have since arrested a 19-year-old man in connection with the assault.

A woman, who works as a cleaning manager at a restaurant in the area, said she arrived to chaotic scenes at 5am.

She told Chronicle Live: “When I came here early this morning there was a police officer here and they wouldn’t let us past and into work.

“They told me there had been a ‘serious crime’.

“I got here just after 5am, but I think the police have been here since 3.30am. The forensics arrived at about 8.30am.”

Forensic officers have remained at the scene throughout the day.

Witnesses said they saw officers remove something from the scene, which is cordoned off with police tape.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: “Shortly after 3am today (Monday) we received a report a man had been hospitalised with serious injuries following an assault, consistent with having been caused by a bladed article on the Quayside, near Livello.

“Officers attended the scene and located a male suspect, aged 19, who has since been arrested in connection with the assaults. He remains in police custody at this time, helping with enquiries.

“Officers remain at the scene carrying out further enquiries and anyone with information is asked to get in touch by calling 101 or using the Tell us something page on our website, quoting log NP-20211101-112/120.”

The ambulance service said two patients were taken to hospital.

“We were called to reports of two people injured in the Quayside area of Newcastle city centre shortly after 3am this morning,” a spokesman for North East Ambulance added.

“We dispatched three ambulance crews, two crews from our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), a specialist paramedic, and a clinical care manager, and transported both patients to hospital for further treatment.”

    The investigation continues.
