Ricki Lake is taking a trip down memory lane.

On Friday, during a special Halloween edition of The View, Lake slipped back into her breakout role as Tracy Turnblad from Hairspray, by donning the actual black-and-white patterned minidress she wore for the Hefty Hideaway commercial scene in the classic 1988 film.

To help round out the full Tracy look of yesteryear, she rocked a similar big hair blond 1960s-era wig.

Lake walked out in front of the live audience to the theme song to Hairspray, which made its premiere in theaters back in February 1988.

‘This dress, you guys, has been in a bag for 34 years,’ the 53-year-old actress said moments after being introduced on to the show by Whoopi Goldberg.

‘This is my original dress that I model, I wear it in the Hefty Hideaway [commercial].

Lake explained that the minidress was ‘the one piece she was able to keep’ from filming, and that she had it stored safely in a bag, even after moving many times over the past three decades.

Host Joy Behar then turned the attention to her blonde and black hair in the film and asked if she was able to keep the wig from the movie.

‘The wig was my hair! That was all my hair!” Lake chuckled, while pointing towards her actually hair.

Lake went on to reveal that her hair ‘was never the same’ after all the primping and coloring during filming, adding, ‘I’m grateful, I did what I had to do for this part!’

She then proceeded to give thanks to Hairspray writer and director John Waters ‘for giving me my entire career.’

Of the landmark film’s legacy and impact, Lake said, ‘It changed my entire life, it opened every door for me. John Waters also mentored me in a way [that] I think I stayed pretty humble and grounded through these years.’

Hairspray has been redone a number of times, including on the Broadway stage and on the big screen, since Lake shot original movie in 1987. And it turns out, Lake has had a hard time watching her character be played by another actress, and that it took some time for her to get used to.

‘It was weird seeing these iterations — the musical and someone else playing the role,’ the New York native said.

‘But I’m honored. She’s such a quintessential role model for the underdog and it was just so near and dear to my heart. And I’m just so happy that generations have loved this iconic show.’

After her appearance on The View, Lake took to Instagram and shared a photo of herself wearing the classic dress during her spot on the talk show.

‘Well, this was fun! Thrilled to join the ladies at @theviewabc for #halloween. Wearing my dress from the film. Been in a garment bag for 34 years until now. #hairspray # #heftyhideaway,’ she wrote in the caption.

Along with Lake, the 1988 film also starred Sonny Bono, Debbie Harry, Divine, Jerry Stiller, Leslie Ann Powers, Michael St. Gerard, Colleen Fitzpatrick, among others.

It was a dramatic departure from Waters’s earlier works, with a much broader intended audience.

The film’s PG rating is the mildest rating a Waters film has received; most of his previous films were rated X by the MPAA.

The original movie version was only a moderate success upon its initial theatrical release, earning a gross of $8.3 million at the box office on a $2.7 million budget. However, it managed to attract a larger audience on home video in the early 1990s and subsequently became a cult film classic over the years.
