Olivia said that since this was her first child that she had been receiving a lot of great advice from friends. She admitted though that she found some of the advice confusing.
‘The thing I have the hardest problem with is that I don’t know how many things to get,’ said Olivia. ‘I don’t know how many onesies you’re supposed to get. I don’t know how many bottles you’re supposed to get. I don’t know how many diapers you are supposed to have.’
Olivia said she needed very specific advice.
‘I think you only need one onesie,’ said Seth. ‘I think that is why they are called that.’

Seth asked Olivia if she had received any good advice. She told him that the one thing that came to her mind that she would not necessarily classify as great advice was that she had a friend who told her that she had a gift and would be able to tell her how tall her baby would be.
The friend asked for her height. Olivia told her she was 5ft5in and that John Mulaney, 39, was 6 feet tall and then the friend predicted that their baby would be 6 feet tall.
Seth said he liked a friend who would make a prediction that you couldn’t find out if they were wrong or right until the kid was 18.

‘I promise I’m right,’ quipped Seth. ‘Stay in touch.’
Seth asked Olivia if her mother was excited about being a grandmother again. Olivia said her mother was but had been insisting that she wanted the baby to stay with her alone in Oklahoma for ‘two weeks, 15 days.’
Olivia asked her why she wanted the baby in Oklahoma and her mother told her ‘because I want to be able to do whatever I want with the baby and the parents can’t tell me no.’

‘So she is not going to get the baby for two weeks,’ said Olivia.
Seth told her that sometimes grandparents act like they have ‘diplomatic immunity’ in the way that they care for their grandchildren.
Olivia agreed. She said once when they took care of her niece she watched her mother purposefully ignore her sister’s no dairy and no sugar rules. She said she saw her mother give the child an ice cream cone and told Olivia to keep it a secret.

‘So now I remember that so clearly I’m like, umm, I’m very wary of her,’ Olivia said.
Olivia also shared details about her new movie Violet where she plays a woman competing with a self-doubting voice inside of her head. The movie also stars Justin Theroux, 50, who provides the insidious voice in her head, and was directed by Justine Bateman, 55, in her directorial debut.
She told Seth that this project was particularly emotionally exhausting for her. Olivia said she was already one of those people who struggle with that internal dialogue and that voice that is always telling her things that create ‘self doubt and self hate.’

‘I struggle with that a lot,’ said Olivia. ‘ I’ve worked really hard to put that voice in a box.’
Olivia said she remembered breaking down crying on set in scenes where she wasn’t supposed to be crying. Because it was an independent movie on a tight budget, Olivia said the assistant director would come over after they yelled cut and would tell her that they really needed her to stop crying so they could get back to the scene.
‘And I was like, ”Okay”,’ said Olivia, as she recalled how she had to quickly compose herself between takes. ‘Just bury it deep down like my mom taught me. Just bury all that stuff and just keep on going.’
‘See, that’s what she can teach your baby when she has her for two weeks, 15 days,’ Seth quipped.
Violet will be in select theaters on Friday and will be available at home on demand on November 9.
